AFUE Rating
An AFUE or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating is a measure of how efficient a furnace or boiler is at turning the fuel it receives into heat, divided by the amount of fossil fuel it uses each year.
The higher the rating, the more able the furnace or boiler is to turn energy into heat and save you money on your heating bills.
Example…
For example, a furnace with an AFUE of 90% means it is able to turn 90% of the energy it receives into heat, with only 10% being lost. A low AFUE rating of around 70% effectively wastes 30% of the energy it receives, being able to only convert 70% into heat.
However, the AFUE rating does not take account the loss of heat through pipes and ducts where energy losses can be around 35%.
The AFUE rating helps you to make an informed decision when purchasing a new heating system, both in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact.
