How To Reduce Hot Water Use
Reducing hot water usage (and water use in general) is achievable in a few simple ways.
Look For Any Leaks
Firstly, you can fix any leaky pipes, faucets and shower heads. Take a tour around you home to locate any drips or leaks. By simply fixing one dripping faucet, you can save around $35 per year in energy costs, as well as over 1600 gallons of water.
Get Energy Efficient Appliances
You can also select appliances that use low amounts of water and power, which are typically labelled as energy efficient models. Follow the recommendations of the appliance manufacturer when using it to help reduce water consumption. Many current hot water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines use far less water and power than those of years gone by.
Install Low Flow Water Fixtures
Installing low flow fixtures can limit the amount of hot water when using a faucet, shower head or appliance. New regulations say that a shower head must not exceed 2.5 gallons per minute when flowing, considerably less than the 5.5 gallons per minute common before 1992. Low flow fixtures can reduce water your usage to anywhere between 25-60% depending on what water using appliances or faucets you have in your home.
